The Islamic Society was set up in 1999 by a couple of boys with the help of a parent. The original purpose of the society was to provide a prayer room for the school’s Muslim pupils to pray Duhur and Jummah. In the beginning the society was small and the times difficult. There were times when there were only two pupils for Jummah prayer on Friday, and sometimes we were even forced to pray outside. But the society has grown and improved with time, within the first year we grew from 3 to 30 people every day. In 2001 we drew up our constitution, setting out our aims and objectives, and marking a real step forward for the society. The constiution was redrawn in 2006 and is available upon request.

Since then the society has gone from strength to strength each year, expanding enormously during that time. 2002-2003 saw a number of significant developments which not only marked a huge increase in the society’s activities but also raised the profile of the society. An assembly for the whole school was held in February 2003 on Islam and Peace. The society obtained a notice board and passes were introduced for the first time. The setting up of the society’s website was another landmark in the astonishing rise of the Islamic Society.

The society is expanding each year with a continual increase in membership, we now have over 80 members on our database and it keeps growing. We had a record turnout of over 50 members attending the Islamic Societies Iftar’s and football trips. The committee are currently working on improving the society further, including factors around the school such as a section for the Islamic Society in the school bulletin. Furthermore we have started optional Tajweed and Qur'an sessions as well as Q&A classes for Muslims who are less sure of the circumstances of practising Islam. Along with these, we have also advanced onto a much larger room which we are now free to use – with Wudu facilities. A library has also been started allowing the members to borrow Islamic literature and other material.

We are currently associated with Young Muslims, the under 18's section of the Islamic Society of Britain where we participate in events such as Islam Awareness Week which we are doing for the third year running. We also follow events organised by YM and help encourage Young Muslims to get involved and active in Islam not only inside, but also outside school.
